Salvador Recalls His African Ancestors In Food, Dance, Music And Faith
August 11th, 2010 by Enrique Van OppenSalvador was the first capital of colonial Brazil, from 1549 until 1763, when he lost the post to Rio de Janeiro. Until now the two cities competing to see who attracts more tourists and foreign. Disputes aside, Salvador has one asset that no other Brazilian city has: its explicit connections with Africa.
The african-Brazilian culture is left literally play for tourists who choose to Salvador. With 80% of the black population, the city is one of the world that most preserve the colors and sounds of the continent of their ancestors slaves. At the same time, it also renew their beliefs daily. The syncretism of religion, in terraces or churches, the berimbau and rhythmic strokes that give the tone of poultry, and the sympathy of the Bahian ways plump, serving delicacies based on palm oil, pepper and coconut milk, do the tourist recall the time: yes, this is Bahia.
On the slopes of Pelourinho, a postcard of the city and World Heritage Site, in front of houses that began to be restored in the 1990s, the simple people struggling smiles, even with the difficulties. And try to survive, either as walking, with your small business. But when the evening comes, he will anchor a bench in the square and see life pass. There are even those who venture into a partidinha checkers.
Salvador is so prosaic that it seems that you already know the city on his first visit. Everything there is memory, a book, a movie, a song, a story. The Red River of Jorge Amado, the Itaparica of João Ubaldo Ribeiro, the Lower City of the traits of shameless Carybé the Itapuã Caymmi’s the nostalgia of Caetano and Gil and to the Carnival of Daniela Mercury and many others.
The Bahia is heir to the joy and rhythm. He dances, he knows first, and then to show others. The African drums that set the tone african blocks are the same that resonate in the church of Our Lady of the Rosary of Blacks and more than 200 candomblé city.
The city has the color and smell of nostalgia for a distant Africa, and the impossibility of having what could not become one. The pepper that heats the cooking is the same that makes life taste. The Salvadorian is the artist who admires the beauty of his usual routine. He is there, the slope of the Historic Center, among other places, just waiting for the tourist to discover the beauty as well.
About Dance Music
August 8th, 2010 by Enrique Van OppenWhile we all know that Jazz is as much a style of music as it is a style of dance, many people may not realize the importance that dance has played in music. There are many songs out there that mention the importance of dancing and yet we as a society seem to have forgotten the importance or limited that importance to a certain age group. Once we age it seems that we forget not only how to dance but also the intrinsic importance of dancing as well.
“I Hope You Dance” is only one of many songs that relate the important role that dancing plays in feeding the human soul. If one thing in life is important for all, that one thing would be to dance whenever the opportunity arises. You never know when you will run out of opportunities to dance or find that you’ve squandered so many of them away. Take them as they come and your life will be filled with much greater joy than you may ever realize. Despite many other songs out there that may convey the message, there are very few that say it more concisely than this particular song. “When you get the choice to sit it out or dance, I hope you’ll dance”.
Garth Brooks is another musician that had an excellent commentary on dance. His song “The Dance” chronicles not necessarily the importance of dancing but of participating. Given the choice, many who have lost their lives in some risky endeavor would more than likely tell those left behind that they would not have traded the dance for one more breath. The lyrics to this song are somewhat haunting “I could have missed the pain but I’d have had to miss the dance”.
Believe it or not all good songs that mention dance do not happen to be country songs. These honestly happen to be, in my opinion, the most poignant. Other great songs about dance include the song “Let’s Dance” by David Bowie. The lyrics to this song include the stanza “Let’s dance for fear tonight is all”. The truth of the matter is that you never know and dancing is a great way to celebrate living.
Music and dance for years have gone hand in hand and will continue to do so long after we’ve left this earth. At least that would be the hope. I would hate to see what a world without dance would be like. It would be like having children without laughter and that would be a sad world in which to live. If you want to keep your children dancing then you must teach them to dance. Teach them that it is okay to dance and be silly around the house. That it is okay to dance their way through their chores (hey if it makes them smile while taking out the trash I say go for it!). Teach them that dancing is a great way to express joy and that laughter is the best thing to follow their dance.
Native Americans have a long and noble heritage when it comes to dance. They let their dreams beat out the heartbeat of Mother Earth and danced in companionship with nature. They danced for joy and sorrow, war, peace, and praise. I can think of no better example to follow when it comes to dance.

What are the chances of getting a decent music production/business job?
July 9th, 2010 by Enrique Van OppenI’m in my 3rd year of trying out different university degrees and I’m not sure it’s what I’m looking for. I’ve always been drawn to the idea of finding a job in music business, production or live sound (I’m still trying to figure out whether this is naive or not). I’m completely willing to go through a college program if it helps. So, if anyone has such a related job, I’d love to know what your life is like: do you like your job? is the pay decent? what are the chances of landing a good career? Thanks in advance!
Understanding Electronic Circuits
May 31st, 2010 by Enrique Van OppenIf you are interested in electronics, you are probably wondering how electronic circuits work. It is basically a component of every electronic device that you can think of. Without circuits, electrical currents have no means of traveling through the individual electronic parts of different devices.
An electronic circuit commonly consists of different electronic parts such as resistors, transistors, and capacitors. The connection between these individual pieces is created through the use of wires or traces, which allows electricity to flow through. The operation of a circuit can be basic or complex depending on the combination of the different elements. Today, circuits are conventionally seen in printed boards where the various pieces of the outline are interconnected by soldering the parts to the board in creating a final product.
Circuits can be categorized into three forms: the analog circuit, the digital circuit, and the mixed signal circuit.
1. Analog circuits. This is a type of circuitry that uses energy in its original form. It is best embodied by electronic circuit diagrams where the connections between the parts are represented by symbols (where wires appear as lines and different electronic pieces correspond to a specific emblem.) For analog circuits, there are two basic constructions: the parallel circuit and the series circuit.
a. In a parallel connection, every single electronic part is attached to the same source of energy. The current that passes through the individual components of the circuit is divided between the pieces according to their particular resistance.
b. In a series circuit, individual components are connected to each other in such that the current that will be used by a single part will be used by all the others. In this connection, a failure in one of the pieces will result to a malfunction of the whole.
2. Digital circuits. In this type of connection, energy is processed as a sample. This means that signals are taken in by the device as a representation of logical and numerical correspondents. The information, in this case, is processed and takes the form of a binary code. Digital circuits are far easier to design than analog ones.
3. Mixed signal circuits. This is a form of circuitry that uses both the analog and the digital circuits in its function. It uses a mixture of both signals in order to achieve its various utility. In most devices, analog circuitry is used to intensify the signals which prepare it for conversion into digital codes.
Circuit diagrams, on the other hand, provide you with a map of the electric flow. It is a means by which you can have an idea as to how the current follows a succession in an electronic device making it possible for you visualize how it functions. The main reason for creating this representation is to provide an outline for the electric components as well as the wires and the paths that connect them. A schematic diagram allows for the convenient repair of an electronic unit. It also gives you ample time to troubleshoot an instrument at a convincingly faster pace if you know what you are doing.
Electronic circuitry is part of your daily life. You may not realize it at all times but there are a number of instruments that require the use of these connections before you can utilize them. In a way, you experience a lot of convenience in living because of the reliable circuits present in the different devices that you use everyday.
Imagine your life without circuits and you will definitely realize how important they are to you. Without these electrical connections, life will be a bit more complicated and backwards. Understanding electronics may not be your forte, but knowing how circuits contribute to its capacity to operate surely answers your curiosity and gives you a better appreciation of how electronic instruments work.
